It’s a frustrating experience not to get a job you were hopeful to land, but it’s also an opportunity to gain some helpful insight, especially in regards to interviewing. Asking questions is a crucial part of a job search and its’ oft overlooked, to the detriment of the candidate. Feedback from your recruiter can be very useful in developing an interview style that gets noticed. And knowing the right questions to ask them is key. Also, keeping in mind how short on time most recruiters are, it’s much more efficient to ask them a few, specific questions.
Here’s three great questions to consider:
- What were my strengths/weaknesses in the interview?
- Why, specifically, did they pass on me? Often companies claim that a candidate is not a “good fit.” It’s worth asking your recruiter if they elaborated on why this was so in your case.
- Was it clear to the interviewer that I had prepared/was knowledgeable of the company and position?
Again, regardless of what you decide to ask, be brief. Don’t overwhelm a recruiter’s time with tons of questions when a few will do. The answers you receive will be much more useful this way.
Keep the job hunt going! Good luck! You got this.
