Are you disgruntled at work? Feeling like maybe your workplace isn’t the right fit for you? Or perhaps considering a career change? We’ve all been there at one time or another. And while some days it may feel overwhelmingly tempting to just jump ship, it’s important to take the time to evaluate whether or not that’s the right decision.
Be realistic. If you want to quit your job because there are a few things that annoy you about it, remember that there are annoying aspects to every job. The grass may actually NOT be greener on the other side. Ask yourself what changes you can make to improve the situation. You may find that coming to peace with these annoyances brings a welcome change in perspective (do note we are referring to critical problems here).
Ask for more. Sometimes the frustration we have with our job has to do with feeling stuck. Break out of the mold! Ask for opportunities to learn new skills and be specific with what you want them to be. Demonstrating your initiative to take the position to the next level could very well encourage management to start regarding your role in a different light, one that better suits your objectives.
Still unhappy? Convinced leaving your job is the best decision? It may be! So let’s make sure you do it the right way (no matter how disgruntled you may feel) with this one important piece of advice:
Keep the bridge intact, if possible. Follow company protocol when resigning. Tell your boss first. Keep the conversation professional and stick to your facts when explaining the decision to leave.
The best decisions are often those we take the time to consider before acting on, so the next time you’re feeling the urge to move on, hit pause and reflect on the whys. It’ll help protect and prepare you for your next steps, whether its’ a decision to stay or to start looking elsewhere.
